World Cup 2018: Group H, Colombia And Japan Advance To Second Round

Colombia and Japan have advance to the second round of the World Cup 2018. Colombia beat out Senegal 1-0 with a goal from the Barcelona Yerry Mina. Despite losing to Poland, Japan also made it to the next round with help from FIFA Fair Play as they were tied with Senegal in yellow cards. In addition, this would be the first time ever a team gets knocked out of the World Cup using the Fair Play system.

Nevertheless, before the magnificent goal by Mina, and Japan losing, Senegal would had gone to the next round with Colombia.

Colombia and Japan now wait to face either England or Belgium in the Round of 16.

All is not well with Colombia though, their star player James Rodriguez left the game with a recurrence calf injury.

Japan will be the only Asian team to go to the next round. No more African teams will be present in the Round of 16.

Colombia (2-1-0, 6 points)

  • Results: Lost to Japan, 2-1. Defeated Poland, 3-0. Defeated Senegal, 1-0.
  • Notable: Colombia made to the quarterfinals for the first time in Brazil 2014. They are now advancing to the Round of 16 for the third time.
  • Player to watch: Radamel Falcao, El Tigre is hoping to take the reigns of the team in the absence of James Rodriguez. The team will depend on his abilities should they advance past England or Belgium.

Japan (1-1-1,4 points)

  • Results: Defeated Colombia, 2-1. Drew with Senegal 2-2. Lost to Poland, 0-1.
  • Notable: This is the third time that Japan makes it to the Round of 16. This is their sixth straight World Cup appearance.
  • Player to watch: Keisuke Honda, the AC Milan player is the leader of the Samurai Blue who will look to make it to the quarterfinals for the first time ever.
