Mike Hoffman Traded to Sharks, Panthers in Same Day
Forward Mike Hoffman had been in the news quite a bit recently due to a very disturbing off-ice allegation involving his girlfriend. This morning, he’s in the news again, but this time it is hockey related.
Hoffman was traded twice in a two-hour span today, first going to the San Jose Sharks before being dealt again to the Florida Panthers.
In the original deal with the Sharks, the Senators received forward Mikkel Boedker in return.
Boedker had a decent season himself for the Sharks. The 28-year-old Denmark native had 15 goals and 37 points in 74 games with San Jose in 2017-18. It was his fifth straight season of 10 or more goals. He also added one goal and six points in 10 playoff games this past spring.
Moreover:
In 618 career NHL games with the Coyotes, Avalanche, and Sharks, Boedker has amassed 109 goals and 288 points. He’s tallied six goals and 17 points in 34 career postseason games.
The deal also included defenseman prospect Cody Donaghey and a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft going to the Sharks. San Jose, meanwhile, included defenseman prospect Julius Bergman and their sixth-round pick in 2020.
About two hours later, the Sharks traded Hoffman and a draft pick to the Florida Panthers in exchange for three draft picks.
Hoffman is coming off four straight 20-goal seasons in Ottawa. Last season, the 28-year-old posted 22 goals and 56 points in 82 games. Hoffman had been a consistent producer with the Senators since joining the team full-time in 2014-15. He’s had no less than 48 points and played in no less than 74 games the last four years.
In his seven-year career, all with the Senators, Hoffman has tallied 107 goals and 230 points in 342 games. He also has seven goals and 14 points in 25 career playoff games.
OTTAWA HAPPY WITH TRADE
Ottawa general manager Pierre Dorion expressed his contentment with the deal.
“Today’s trade showcases our determination to strengthen the future of the team by improving chemistry, leadership and character in the locker room and on the ice,” Dorion said. “We are confident it is a step in the right direction for the long-term success of this organization.
Reading between the lines, Dorion was referring to the allegations that surfaced last week regarding Hoffman’s girlfriend.
According to a report that surfaced last week, Senators captain Erik Karlsson’s wife, Melinda, had filed an application for a peace bond against Hoffman’s girlfriend, Monika Caryk. Caryk allegedly harassed and cyber-bullied Karlsson throughout the season, even after the Karlssons’ son was stillborn.
Hoffman denied the allegations, but another report surfaced that Erik Karlsson allegedly confronted Hoffman about the situation.
SAN JOSE CLEARS CAP SPACE
While adding Hoffman to the mix would’ve been a plus for the Sharks, San Jose general manager Doug Wilson obviously had another goal in mind.
In dealing Boedker, Wilson cleared $4 million in cap space in the next two seasons. Boedker has two years remaining on his four-year, $16 million deal.
Wilson also avoided taking on the remaining two years of Hoffman’s contract that carries an average annual value of $5.1875 million.
It is believed the Sharks are going to make an aggressive push to sign pending unrestricted free agent John Tavares.
