Arsenal welcomes Unai Emery as new coach
London, England – As previously reported by TSJ101 SPORTS, Arsenal have appointed Unai Emery as new head coach of the Gunners.
“I am thrilled to be joining one of the great clubs in the game,”Emery told Arsenal’s website.
“Arsenal is known and loved throughout the world for its style of play, its commitment to young players, the fantastic stadium, the way the club is run. I’m very excited to be given the responsibility to start this important new chapter in Arsenal’s history.
The 46-year-old Spaniard spent a two-year spell at Paris Saint-Germain. While at PSG he lead the club to a treble of Ligue 1, Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue. In addition to this, he had previously spent three seasons with Sevilla. Emery lead the Hispalense club to an unprecedented three consecutive Europa League titles while also establishing the club as a major force in La Liga.
However, despite local success, he was unable to bring the desire title to the Parisians, the UEFA Champions League. Nevertheless, Arsenal has only managed local success and have not passed the round of 16. This will be perhaps Emery’s biggest challenge while at Arsenal.
What Will Unai Emery do?
Arsene Wenger left Arsenal after 22-years at the helm. However, he left the club in sixth placed in the Premier League table. With the club not qualifying for Champions, the instant success will be with the FA Cup and Europa League. Fighting for the league title will be rather difficult. The success and domination shown by Manchester United and Manchester City in that last couple of seasons have been out remarkable. In addition to this, depending on Liverpool’s success this weekend against Real Madrid, the Reds may be another club that will be in contention.
Nevertheless, the Emery’s experience with lower-seeded clubs have been key to his success. While Arsenal is a big club, in its history, it is more of a generator of new players that later on become stars. By this same token, it is likely that Arsenal preferred him over Mikel Arteta that lacked any experience.
However, setting Arsenal in the top 4 slots at the end of the season will be Emery’s biggest goal. The Spaniard needs to be able to place the club in those slots to qualify for Champions.
Emery’s success has come from squeezing every small effort from its players and operating on a reduced budget. Continuing with this thought, may be the success that Arsenal will have. However, don’t expect any brilliant play. Emery’s style of play is not the reason he was hired. If anything, its the quite the opposite. Immediate success.
