Yankees Trade Reliever Adam Ottavino To Red Sox
The New York Yankees have traded reliever Adam Ottavino to the Boston Red Sox. In addition, the Red Sox are also receiving minor leaguer Frank German. The Yankees will receive either cash or a player to be named later. The move proves to be essentially a salary dump for the Yankees, and the Red Sox get a dominant arm in their bullpen.
Originally, Ottavino signed a three-year, $27 million deal with the Yankees before the 2019 season. In 2019, Ottavino pitched to a 1.90 ERA with 88 strikeouts over 66 and 1/3 innings pitched. However, Ottavino struggled during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He held an ERA barely under 6.00 and blew three saves for the Yankees in 24 appearances.
Impact On The Red Sox
The Red Sox get potentially a great arm at the back of their bullpen. Along with Matt Barnes, Ottavino will most likely get the bulk of the late-inning work. The Red Sox again have made a low-risk, high-reward move as they look to rebound from a miserable 2020 season. Their bullpen still has some unanswered questions, however, adding Ottavino is a great first step in improving their pitching.
