Andrew Cashner Red Sox Debut

Background Information

Andrew Cashner has been in MLB since his debut in 2010 with the Chicago Cubs. Since then he has started in 183 of his 276 appearances. He has recorded a lifetime total of 55 wins, 3 shutouts, and 861 strikeouts. The Red Sox acquired Cashner from the Orioles, who he played for since 2018. Cashner’s role with the Orioles was as a starter. This will be his role during his stay in Boston also. Cashner has always been a strikeout pitcher with a great curveball and a strong fastball. During his tenure with the Orioles he recorded a total of 13 wins and 165 strike outs. Historically Cashner has always had a somewhat high era. However he still manages to get outs and, more importantly, win games. Cashner has been—and hopefully will continue to be—a dominant starting pitcher who has the ability to win games.

Red Sox Debut

I guess I’ll address the elephant in the room. On July 16, 2019 Andrew Cashner made his Red Sox debut. Putting it the nicest way possible, it was less than stellar. He went 5 innings allowing: 5 runs, 8 hits, 2 walks, and 2 home runs. The Red Sox were in dire need of another veteran starter that they could rely on with Chris Sale not having his best season and the loss of Nathan Eovaldi to injury. They looked to Baltimore to acquire Cashner. Cashner’s debut was not the result that the Red Sox wanted to see at all. However there were brief glimpses of just how dominant he can be when he is playing to his fullest ability. Even throughout his rough start he demonstrated the great movement he gets on his curveball and his ability to get strikeouts. Hopefully moving forward Cashner will settle in better as a pitcher for the Red Sox and will be able to play to the caliber of his full potential and be a extremely useful asset for the Red Sox moving forward.
