Bum Bounces Back- Giants Beat Rockies 4-2
Madison Bumgarner’s worst career start came against the Dodgers last Thursday. Many were starting to question whether the Giants’ ace would be able to get a huge haul at the trade deadline like earlier predicted. And then, Bumgarner responded Tuesday night with a classic performance that we are used to seeing from the Giants’ ace.
Bumgarner looked sharp from the start, striking out 11 Rockies over six innings. Along the way he only gave up two runs: a solo shot from Ian Desmond and a misplay by left fielder Alex Dickerson. Of course, it wouldn’t be a classic Bumgarner performance if he didn’t also come through with the bat. He helped out his own cause with an RBI single.
After Bumgarner, the Giants showed off their other strong point of the team: their bullpen. The combination of Sam Dyson, Tony Watson, and Will Smith have proved beneficial over and over. Last night’s game was no different. And with yet another dominating closing performance from Will Smith, it might be time to wonder if a package of Smith and Bumgarner will get the most value back for the Giants.
The offense was clicking as well. Alex Dickerson continued his tear with a double in his two-hit night. Brandon Belt from the leadoff spot drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Donovan Solano had an RBI single and Tyler Austin with a pinch-hit home run in the seventh to give the Giants a little bit of breathing room.
Tuesday night’s game against the Rockies was a fun one. And that’s something we don’t get too often anymore. And after the July 31st trade deadline, we might not get it at all. But for now, it’s nice for Giants fans to live in the moment, and enjoy another classic type of victory for Bumgarner and the Giants.
