Mets Add More Outfield Depth With Matt Kemp
After signing Ervin Santana earlier today, the Mets have added even more depth by signing outfielder Matt Kemp to a minor-league deal. Kemp spent the start of this season with the Reds. He was acquired via trade in what was essentially a salary dump for the Dodgers. In Cincinnati, Kemp slashed .200/.210/.283 with one homer, five RBIs, and four runs scored before he was released in May.
Kemp had a terrific year with the Dodgers last year hitting .290 with 21 homers and 85 RBIs. Throughout his career with the Dodgers, Padres, Braves, and Reds, he slashed .285/.337/.485 with 281 homers and 1,010 RBIs. He is also a three-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glover, and two-time Silver Slugger.
Kemp will provide yet another great outfield depth piece for the Mets. Brodie Van Wagenen has done a great job of bringing in experienced veterans to serve as depth pieces. Other guys he has brought in include Santana, Carlos Gomez, Rajai Davis, Gregor Blanco, and Adeiny Hechavarria.
Kemp’s Impact With The Mets
Kemp will serve mostly off-the-bench and as added outfield depth. However, Kemp can potentially make a statement with the Mets. Though he is only a .235 career hitter in the playoffs, he has been in the playoffs on four separate occasions. This would be great for the Mets considering a lot of their roster has yet to play in a postseason game or has very little experience. His veteran presence and experience are great for a young Mets outfield. He won’t come right out to New York to join the team, however, if the Mets face another injury, Kemp can very well find himself with the team.
