Mets Place Canó and McNeil on 10-Day IL
The Mets have announced that they have placed Robinson Canó and Jeff McNeil on the 10-Day IL. Canó is dealing with a low-grade quad strain and McNeil has some hamstring tightness. In a corresponding move, the Mets have recalled infielder Luis Guillorme and reliever Ryan O’Rourke from Triple-A Syracuse.
Canó (who left Wednesday’s game after running to first on a groundball) has not had a great offensive in his first season with the Mets. He is currently slashing .241/.287/.371 with three homers and 13 RBIs. His bat has struggled to get going and Canó has been under a lot of scrutiny over running out groundballs. Mets will most likely have Guillorme and Adeiny Heccavarria take over his role at second.
McNeil is simply one of the best pure hitters, not only on the Mets but in all of baseball. He is currently slashing .333/.418/..461 with two homers, 15 RBIs, and 20 runs scored. McNeil was moved to the outfield when the Mets acquired Canó and has continued his offensive success from last season. With McNeil on the IL, J.D. Davis and Dom Smith will most likely share reps in left. This will also keep Lagares in center and Carlos Gomez in right for the time being.
Impact On The Mets
With McNeil now on the shelf, the entire Mets Opening Day outfield is now on the IL (Nimmo with a stiff neck and Conforto due to a concussion). However, the good news is Conforto should be back soon and McNeil and Nimmo’s injury are both minor and the Mets are playing it safe. This is also the case with Canó’s injury. The Mets are losing two great hitters from their lineup, however, this will give guys like Davis, Smith, Rajai Davis, and Hecavarria an opportunity to show the Mets what they got.
