Mets End 5-Game Skid With 5-3 Win Over Nationals

The Mets put an end to their 5-game skid with a 5-3 win over the Washington Nationals. Wilmer Font got the start for the Mets where he went four innings allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts. The Mets had a tough-task against Nationals lefty Patrick Corbin. However, the Mets came through and Corbin lasted just five innings allowing four runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. In Game 2 of the four-game set, the Mets are sending Zack Wheeler (3-3 with a 4.85 ERA) to the mound against Erick Fedde (0-0 with a 3.38 ERA).

Pre-Game “Drama”

Before last night’s game, the Mets held a press conference featuring GM Brodie Van Wagenen and manager Mickey Callaway. Contrary to much speculation, Brodie ensured the media that Mickey was the team’s manager for the future and that they felt confident in his abilities. Brodie also gave some general roster updates. Seth Lugo is heading to the 10-Day IL with shoulder tendinitis and they have purchased the contract of Hector Santiago. In addition, the Mets recently learned that Yoenis Céspedes suffered a fractured ankle while working on his ranch in Florida (for the time being, you can probably rule out Céspedes for the rest of 2019).

Game Recap

After a vote of confidence from the front office, Callaway and the Mets went out and beat the Nationals. Amed Rosario got the scoring started with a solo homer in the first (his fourth of the year). Two batters later, Pete Alonso crushed his 15th homer of the year. The Mets continued to add offense with an RBI single from Todd Frazier and RBI double from Carlos Gomez and made it 4-0 in the third. Their bats would remain quiet until the eighth inning where Dom Smith would add an insurance run with an RBI single.

For the Nationals, they struggled to get going offensively until the fourth. Anthony Rendon got the Nats on the board with a solo homer followed shortly by a Yan Gomes RBI single. Juan Soto would add an RBI single of his own in the eighth before Edwin Díaz came in to notch his 11th save of the season.

What’s Next?

The Mets will play three more games against Washington to finish off the series. They won’t meet again until August. After that, they will welcome in the Detroit Tigers to Flushing for three games before heading to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers.
