Mets DFA Travis d’Arnaud; Recall Tomás Nido From Syracuse
The Mets have DFA’d catcher Travis d’Arnaud and have recalled Tomás Nido from Triple-A Syracuse. You may recall that d’Arnaud was part of the trade that gave the Mets him and Noah Syndergaard in exchange for R.A. Dickey back in December of 2012. d’Arnaud has been just 2-23 at the plate this year and has struggled defensively.
In a corresponding move, the Mets recalled Tomás Nido to take his roster spot. Nido has yet to have his breakout season for the Mets, however, he has proved to be a more reliable option behind the plate for the Mets, and will serve as the backup catcher to Wilson Ramos. In his brief stint with the Mets in 2019, Nido is 0-6.
d’Arnaud’s Mets Career
The 30-year-old catcher came to the Mets back in 2012 when the Mets acquired him, John Buck, and Noah Syndergaard in exchange for R.A. Dickey. d’Arnaud was expected to be the Mets primary catcher for years to come. With the Mets, he slashed .242/.303/.401 with 47 homers, 164 RBIs, 152 runs scored, and a career WAR of 2.0. He also was part of the Mets 2015 World Series team. In his postseason career, he hit just .182 with three homers and seven RBIs. d’Arnaud certainly had his moments with the Mets, however, after all the injuries (including Tommy John Surgery), d’Arnaud’s Mets career appears to be over. It should be interesting to see if any teams will take their shot with d’Arnaud has a change of scenery may be beneficial to him.
