Looking Back At Rare Yankee Visits To San Francisco

The Giants are set to begin a three-game weekend series tonight with the New York Yankees. This will be the Bronx Bombers first visit to Oracle Park since 2007 and only the third visit to San Franciso in history. So instead of talking about the beat-up Yankees or the Giants struggles this year, let’s take a look down memory lane at the two other appearances the Yankees have made in the city by the bay.

1962 World Series: Yankees Win Series 4-3

The Giants featured the likes of Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, and Filipe Alou. The Yankees brought Mickey Mantle, Roger Marris, and Tony Kubek. The 1962 World Series appeared like it would be one to remember. And it would live up to the hype. Games 1,2,6, and 7 took place in Candlestick Park. Game 1 featured a 6-2 Yankee win, with Whitey Ford pitching the complete game. Game 2 saw the Giants get back on track with a 2-0 shutout. Lead by a complete game from Jack Sanford and a late Home Run by Willie McCovey to put the Giants up two.

Back to Candlestick for Game 6 and the Giants trailing three games to two, the team would ride Billy Pierce to a complete game and Orlando Cepeda to a two-RBI day to force Game 7. Then the game that would haunt many Giants fans for a long time, with 2 outs and runners on second and third, Willie McCovey stepped up with his team down one.  He would hit a screamer right at second basemen Bobby Richardson to end the series.

June 22-24 2007: Giants Win Series 2-1

The only regular-season visit to San Francisco by the Yankees featured one of the most amazing combinations of talent in one stadium not including the All-Star Game. Starting Line-Ups included Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriquez, Omar Vizquel, Derek Jeter, Dave Roberts, and Robinson Cano. Pitchers included Matt Cain, Mariano Rivera, Chien-Ming Wang, Noah Lowry and more. This series would not be quite as exciting as their World Series clash. Game 1 saw a 7-3 Yankee route featuring a double by A-Rod and a couple of triples by Jeter and Melky Cabrera. As well as a Home Run from Barry Bonds. Game 2 was better, a 6-5 Giants win in 13 Innings with the walk-off coming from Nate Schierholtz off of Scott Proctor. Game 3 saw the Giants get a route of their own 7-2. With two RBI’s from Ray Durham and 1 from the pitcher Noah Lowry.

April 26-28 2019: Another Interesting Series

2019’s visit from the Yankees might not be as star-studded as the first two. With the Yankees legendary Injury List and the Giants in semi-rebuild mode. It’s still special getting the chance to see an opponent in your home ballpark that is rarely there. Madison Bumgarner vs. James Paxton will kick off the weekend series between two legendary teams. So while the teams may not be at full strength, we should still expect to see a good weekend of baseball in San Francisco.
