Mets Activate Todd Frazier; Place Justin Wilson on IL

Just before tonight’s game against the Phillies, the Mets have activated Todd Frazier from the injured list. In a corresponding move, the Mets have also placed lefty reliever Justin Wilson on the 10-Day IL with left elbow soreness. In addition, the team has also recalled Luis Guillorme and optioned reliever Paul Sewald.

Wilson’s injury comes as a bit of a surprise as really not many realized he was facing soreness. Of course, he has not pitched recently which led many to believe something was wrong. He has had a decent start for the Mets (1-1 with a 3.24 ERA with eight strikeouts) and was a great lefty option for Mickey Callaway. In his absence, Mets will look towards Luis Avilán and Daniel Zamora as their lefty options in the bullpen.

Frazier Set For 2019 Debut

Todd Frazier being activated will mark the beginning of his 2019 campaign. In his first year as a Met, Frazier slashed .213/.303/.390 with 18 homers and 59 RBIs. Frazier also was a terrific clubhouse leader for the team, especially in the absence of David Wright.

With Frazier (and eventually Jed Lowrie) returning to the team, Mickey Callaway is going to have some tough decisions to make regarding who to play. Jeff McNeil has certainly earned his spot in the everyday lineup. J.D. Davis, who has performed great to start his Mets career, will be the most affected with Frazier returning. The Mets will most likely keep McNeil in left to play with Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto in the outfield and will slot Frazier to take over the role at third. When Lowrie eventually comes back, it will be interesting to see how Mickey plays it out, but until then, Frazier will look to get the Mets back on track as they take on the Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers this week.
