Wheeler Dominates On Both Sides Of The Plate Against Phillies

Last night against the Phillies, Zack Wheeler had perhaps the best night of his Major League career. Wheelers pitched phenomenal against the Phillies as he went seven shutout innings allowing five hits, no walks, and also has 11 strikeouts. To top it off, Wheeler was also a force at the plate. He finished the night 2-3 with a two-run double and a solo homer (the first of his career).

Tonight, the Mets will send Jason Vargas (1-0 with a 9.58 ERA) to face-off against Vince Velasquez (0-0 with a 2.55 ERA) as they go for the sweep against the Phillies, and build some cushion to their division lead.

Game Recap

The Mets offense exploded for nine runs against the Phillies. Zack Wheeler got the scoring started with his two-run double in the second. Later that inning, Wheeler would come around to score after a César Hernández error. In the bottom of the fourth, Wheeler would add to the Mets lead with a solo homer, which was the first of his Major League career. Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, and now Wheeler have all homered for the Mets this year.

In the bottom of the fifth, in only his second game back from injury, Todd Fraizer blew the game open with a grand slam, the fifth of his career. Wilson Ramos would add another RBI single to make it 9-0 Mets.

For the Phillies, it was tough to get the offense going. They failed to get a runner past third base and were shutout for the first time this season. Their star-studded offense will look to leave Flushing avoiding the sweep.

Drama At The End

What’s a baseball game without a little drama at the end? With the Mets up 9-0, Mickey Callaway sent Jacob Rhame to the mound to secure the final three outs. After Aaron Altherr grounded into a double-play, Rhys Hoskins came up as the last hope for the Phillies. Rhame started the at-bat with a 97 MPH fastball that went over the head of Hoskins. Hoskins glared out to the mound and the benches slowly creeped out of the dugout; though no full bench-clearing affair occurred. Rhame would eventually walk Hoskins after sending another fastball that was up and in. Hoskins would take his base and was clearly upset with the at-bat. Though Rhame said neither of those pitches were intentional and had no bad-blood with Hoskins, the Phillies were still upset. Tonight’s game should be a good one to watch to see if the Phillies retaliate.
