Pirates Escape Detroit With Sweep

The Pittsburgh Pirates won game two by a final score of 3-2. Pirates escape Detroit with a sweep.

How The Game Went Down

For the first three innings of the game, they were scoreless. The Pirates scored in the top of the fourth. Josh Bell walked and Melky Cabrera singled. The run score when Ronny Rodriguez committed an error after a ball was hit by Jang Ho Kang.

Likewise, the Tigers loaded the bases when Miguel Cabrera singled, Christin Stewart walked, and Jeimer Candelario was hit by a pitch. Furthermore, Rodriguez hit a sac fly, John Hicks a bloop single to left to score Stewart putting the Tigers up 2-1.

The Pirates would get two more runs one in the eighth and in the tenth.

Pitchers Duel

Not much offense was on display in this game. To counteract that, both starters from both teams went toe-to-toe. Trevor Williams started for the Pirates and pitched six innings allowing six hits, two runs both earned, one walk and five punch outs.

Spencer Turnball started for the Tigers and pitched six innings allowing two hits, no runs, two walks, and five punch outs.

The bullpens for both teams took over after the sixth inning.

Road Trip

Besides the two games in Detroit, the Pirates also visited the Chicago Cubs for three and the Washington Nationals for three. On this road trip, the Pirates went 5-3 and were outscored 25-28. The Pirates have also played ten games on the road and have a record of 6-4 in those games.

Conclusion

Both games went into the tenth inning to determine a winner. The Pirates narrowly escaped both games. Currently, the Pirates sit in second place in the NL Central division standings with an overall record of 10-6 and are 7-3 in their last ten games. After an off day on Thursday, the Pirates will head back to PNC Park where they’ll open a six-game homestand NL West opponents starting with the San Francisco Giants followed by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
