Canó, deGrom Lead Mets To Opening Day Win Over Nationals

The Mets had yet another win on Opening Day as they took down the Washington Nationals 2-0. Robinson Canó had a very impressive debut with the Mets as he drove in both runs. On the mound, Jacob deGrom continued right where he left off last season and dominated the entire Nationals lineup.

For The Mets

Robinson Canó got the Mets offense going quickly with a solo homer in the first inning (his first as a Met). The Mets offense would remain quiet until the eighth inning when Canó added another run with an RBI single scoring Dominic Smith. Other offensive notes included Wilson Ramos collecting his first hit as a Met, and Pete Alonso getting his first hit in the MLB.

On the mound, Jacob deGrom was his dominant self. deGrom went six innings allowing no runs on five hits, one walk, and had 10 strikeouts. He was a little off at the start, but as the game went on, he started to settle in and dominated a tough Nationals lineup. Seth Lugo and Jeurys Familia held down the game until Edwin Díaz came in and earned his first save of the year and as a Met.

For The Foes

The Nationals struggled to get anything going against deGrom. Their best chance came in the third inning but a Victor Robles baserunning mistake cost the Nats a run. In the sixth, they another opportunity that was spoiled as deGrom worked his way out of trouble. Trea Turner has two hits and stole three bases during the game. The 2018 NL Cy Young runner-up Max Scherzer was dominant allowing two runs, two hits, one walk, and 12 strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings.

The Mets and Nationals will square off again on Saturday as Noah Syndergaard will take on Stephen Strasburg.
