Mets Bring Back Veteran Catcher René Rivera
The Mets are reportedly bringing back catcher René Rivera on a minor league deal. With the news breaking of Devin Mesoraco refusing to accept his demotion to the Triple-A team, the Mets brought back Rivera to primarily serve as their backup catcher to Wilson Ramos. He will most likely start the season in Triple-A to allow himself to get back into it after he was released by the Giants. Until then, the Mets appear to have Tomás Nido lined-up to serve as the primary backup catcher to Ramos. Rivera was with the Mets back in 2016 and then went to the Cubs during the 2017 season.
Another Familiar Face Returns To The Mets
Rivera is one of a few familiar faces that the Mets have brought back to the team. Back in his first stint with the Mets in 2016. Rivera slashed .222/.291/.341 with six homers and 26 RBIs. The offensive numbers weren’t great but Rivera was a great defender behind the plate. With his veteran presence behind the plate, Rivera helped keep a young pitching staff in order to push the Mets back to the postseason that year. His presence behind the plate threw out 18 runners on steal attempts and had a near-perfect fielding percentage of .996 (he had only 2 errors in 37 attempts). He will be a great clubhouse leader for the team and will prove to be a solid backup to Wilson Ramos when needed.
