Michigan State Upsets Penn State
This past weekend, then-No.-8 Penn State took on an non-ranked Michigan State Spartans team. The result you may ask? Michigan State upsets Penn State.
When you watch Big Ten East games, yes, they tend to be close. Big Ten East football is physical in many aspects. On the other hand, in some games when you have a ranked team go against a non-ranked team, surprises tend to occur. That’s what happened on Saturday.
How It Happened
For the majority of the game, it was close. And to many fans that wasn’t a good sign. Coming into Saturday’s game, Penn State was ranked No 8 and coming off a bye week, so you would consider them rested. The game was close throughout with Penn State leading 14-7 at the half. Michigan State then went on to score 14 unanswered points.
The play that changed the entire complexion of the game occurred in the fourth quarter. Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke threw a 25-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter to Felton Davis with less than 20 seconds remaining to seal the deal for the Spartans.
What’s Next for Penn State
This loss was a heart breaker to say the least. As a matter of fact, this was an upset. Penn State now has a two game losing streak at home and they have pretty much ruined any shot at making the College Football Playoff at this point. The new AP rankings came out and Penn State dropped to No. 18.
Penn State will next head to Indiana this Saturday to take on the Hoosiers. After losing two straight it will be nice to see how Penn State bounces back from this loss. Looking ahead, Penn State still has to travel to Michigan during the first week of November. Currently, Michigan is No. 6 and have the top-ranked defense in the nation. Not trying to look too far ahead but that game will be a challenge nonetheless.
Conclusion
James Franklin and the rest of the team will look to put this loss behind them as Michigan State upsets Penn State. They need to get back in the win column this weekend against Indiana. Penn State looks to rebound from two consecutive loses; this time it’s on the road.
