Yankees Get Past A’s With 7-2 Win

Last night, the New York Yankees defeated the Oakland A’s 7-2 to win the AL Wild Card game. The Yankees will advance to the ALDS for a second straight season. The Yankees will take on the top team in all of baseball: the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry has finally reached the postseason yet again. Game 1 will take place Friday at Fenway Park at 7:30 pm EST.

Game Recap

The Yankees offense got started quickly. After an Andrew McCutchen walk, Aaron Judge blasted a monster two-run homer to give the Yanks a 2-0 lead in the first. The Yankees were held in check until the sixth inning. Aaron Hicks doubled home Aaron Judge to make it 3-0 Yankees. Later that inning, Luke Voit tripled home Giancarlo Stanton, and Didi Gregorious scored Voit home on a sac fly. After six innings, the Yankees were on top 6-0 and in complete control. The only sign of life from the A’s offense was a Khris Davis two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning. However, in the bottom of the eighth, the Yankees got that run back after a Giancarlo Stanton solo homer. Aroldis Chapman came in to pitch a clean ninth inning, thus giving the Yankees their second straight Wild Card win.

On the mound, Severino settled down after his meltdown in last year’s Wild Card game. Severino went four shutout innings, allowing two hits, four walks, and struck out seven. He showed his dominance early on by striking out five A’s in the first two innings. Severino did not allow a hit until he started the fifth. On the A’s side, opener Liam Hendriks struggled with command early on. Hendriks went one inning, struck out one, walked one, and gave up the homer to Judge.

What Is Next For The Yankees?

The Yankees will head to Boston to take on their arch-rival. Lefty Chris Sale is expected to start for the Red Sox. However, the Yankees starter for Game 1 is still TBD but expected to be either J.A. Happ or Masahiro Tanaka. If the Yankees can get past the Red Sox, they will face the winner of Astros/Indians for the American League Pennant.
