Cubs Drop The Series Opener To The Pirates By A Score Of 5-1

We’re getting down to the nitty-gritty here this final week of Baseball. The Cubs lead the Brewers by a game and a half going into the second game against the Pirates. The Cubs drop the series opener yesterday, but as always there were good signs that make you feel confident. The Cubs offense may have gone cold yet again last night. However, Cole Hamels played very well on both sides of the ball. Giving up just two earned runs in six innings of work. And of course, that bomb to straightaway center to give the Cubs their only run of the night.

Cole Hamels Bounces Back

After a rough outing in his last start, Cole Hamels was looking to get back to it against the Pirates. I don’t think I need to reiterate how great Hamels has been since coming to the Cubs. However, his struggles in his last start prove that he is indeed human. He was able to come back in his next start. Against a decent offense in Pittsburgh, gave up three runs on the night, only two were earned. Kris Bryant making an awful throw that should have been routine was the cause for that. Besides that Hamels was solid, giving up just five hits and striking out seven. I have full confidence in Hamels heading into the postseason.

Offense Is Quite Again

After scoring six and eight runs in the two games prior. The Cubs were held to one measly run, and it was a solo shot by the pitcher Cole Hamels. The Cubs had more than enough opportunities, getting seven hits on the night. Loading the bases once and getting two more men in scoring position later in the game. Cubs situational hitting has been suspect all season, and it bothers me. No matter how good the Cubs become, stranding runners at a high rate will always be their bad side.
