Texas A&M Football Player Ryan McCollum Arrested
Texas A&M back-up center Ryan McCollum was arrested Saturday evening following A&M’s win over Louisiana Monroe. It is unclear at this time what purported the incident.
According to police reports, a bicycle officer saw McCollum driving southbound on Throckmorton street. The 20-year-old was driving a 2012 Ford pickup truck. Reports indicate that he drove recklessly around another vehicle in an attempt to evade the officer. Also, he allegedly was driving recklessly around traffic control personnel at the corner of Throckmorton Street near Lewis Street.
He was apprehended by the same officer on George Bush Drive near Bizzell Street after several commands to get out of the vehicle. McCollum was taken into the Brazos County Detention Center Saturday night and was let go on Sunday on a $7,000 bond.
Also, A native of Spring, TX, McCollum played in 13 games last season with seven starts. He was an a first team all-district at Klein Oak, HS. He chose to stay closer to home turning down offers several Big 12 schools.
McCollum is a vital piece of the offensive line serving as a back-up at every position. Starting center Erik McCoy was injured late in A&M’s win over ULM. However, Jimbo Fisher expects McCoy to play against No. 1 Alabama on Saturday. Nevertheless, McCollum will likely take his place on Saturday if he becomes unable. This of course, pending any outcomes from the incident.
Awaiting The Discipline
It is unknown at this time what disciplinary action head coach Fisher will take against McCollum. Additionally, players see Fisher as a strong disciplinarian. Back in 2015, players came to Fisher’s defense of of handing out discipline. Former wide receiver Bert Reed was one of those players.
“I personally have seen Jimbo make decisions regarding disciplining a player that was probably one of his favorites and you just knew and could see how hard it was on him to have to do that,” Reed added. “He does put the university in front of the program and what we as players represent.”
Additionally, according to KTBX, Bryan College Station, a spokesman for the Texas A&M Athletics Department said they were aware of the situation and “we are following athletics department policy.”
