California Football Preview: Bearish Outlook in Berkeley
It’s season number two in coach Wilcox’s rebuild of California. A team that has been 5-7 the last two seasons. Now though, Wilcox has had his chance to recruit the players he wants in order to run his more tradition scheme compared to Dyke’s “Bear Raid” offenses of past. He has done so as successfully as one could at a non blue blood institution with strict academic requirements for the players. With a 42nd ranked recruiting class according to 24/7 sports in 2018. It’s now up to him to put it all together, against a strong confrence schedule if he wants this team to break out this season.
One big question?
Who will be taking snaps at the beginning of the season? Ross Bowers started for the team last year and has had a chance to get comfortable with the playbook. However, South Carolina Transfer Brandon Mcllwain does bring a dual threat option to the team. Either way offensive cordinator Beau Baldwin will have many options to choose from, and much depth should he need it.
Predictions
I still think this team is a year or so off, especially with a non confrence game against North Carolina, confrence games against Washington, Stanford, and Oregon in the north, and Arizona and USC out of the south. Both of those games are on the road. I just don’t see enough talent on this team to with most of their games.
- My Record for California this season is 6-6 with wins over BYU, Idaho Sate, Oregon State, UCLA, Washington State, and Colorado.
Game to look forward to.
At Arizona, last year the game was decided by one point. This year it is in Tuscon. But if this team plays this game like they did last year they could still come out with the win.
Upset Alert
At UCLA, Chip Kelly turned Oregon into a powerhouse program less than ten years ago. If he can regain his form from Oregon and work his magic quickly in Westwood, along with grooming a replacement for Josh Rosen, they could be a dangerous team in the PAC 12 and dismantle this Golden Bears team.
