College Football
No college team wants offseason mistakes to affect their season, but that is exactly what is happening to the Demon Deacons. The team announced Thursday that Wake Forest suspended two players. Both players have been suspended 3 games for violation of team rules. Kendall Hinton was expected to be the team’s starting quarterback this season. Thomas Cole is a redshirt sophomore tight end. The team did not specify the nature of the rule violation. In his statement, coach Dave Clawson said that the players had “made poor decisions and they take responsibility for their actions.”
Regime Change
Hinton was projected to be the starting QB after four-year starter John Wolford departed. He is 6’0”, 195 pounds and appeared in 5 games last season for the Demon Deacons. The young QB went 24-of-47, with 399 passing yards. He had 4 passing touchdowns in his 5 games. He also had 190 rushing yards and 1 rushing touchdown. John Wolford exhausted his eligibility after the 2017 season, and as such Hinton was set to take over. That clearly is not going to be the case, at least for the first 3 games.
Thomas Cole is 6’5”, 250 pounds. The redshirt sophomore saw play in 3 games last season. He did not record a catch in those 3 games.
Starting the Season
After defeating Texas A&M in the Belk Bowl last season 55-52, the Demon Deacons are looking for a division title this year. Coach Clawson is confident in the ability of his players to get the job done. They open the season at Tulane, then head back home for games against Towson and ACC rival Boston College. Last year’s team saw 5 players on the ESPN ACC All-Bowl team, and the team is hoping to ride that momentum into 2018. Wake Forest suspended two players, but this was not the way the team had hoped to start their season.
