College Football
The college football world was thrown for a collective loop yesterday as star Virginia defensive back Cam’Ron Kelly chose Virginia Tech. Kelly had been fielding offers from 41 different schools. That included offers from Clemson, Penn State, Georgia, Auburn, and Alabama.
Where He’s Been
In his high school’s state championship run this season, junior Kelly did it all. He saw plays at quarterback, running back, and receiver in addition to defensive back. He even played a bit of special teams, returning punts and kicks for his team. Kelly had 13 touchdowns and 1,661 yards for the Tigers this season.
Where He’s Going
247Sports lists Kelly as the No. 5 player in Virginia. They list him as the 158th overall player for the freshman Class of 2019. Kelly is listed at 6’1”, 190 lbs. He has skills enough to be an elite defensive back if he stays at that position. He is dynamic enough when he gets the ball that VT head coach Justin Fuente could also use him on offense. When questioned about why he chose VT over the other schools, Kelly’s answer was simple. He wanted to play cornerback; the bigger schools wanted him to play safety. He also wanted to stay home, and calls VT a “home environment.” VT was not on Kelly’s list of his top 8 schools, and he has yet to make an official visit. Neither of these things seem to have counted against his final choice school. He has been inconsistent contact with the coaching staff at VT through the process. He also has friends on the VT team, including former high school teammate linebacker Keshon Artis.
What This Means for VT
Cam’ron Kelly chose Virginia Tech and will be joining a defense that is showing the world what it can do. Another former high school teammate, running back DeShawn McClease, is expected to compete for a starting role this season. Five-star Devon Hunter is also on the team. Kelly hopes to bring a national championship to VT
