Phillies Keep J.T. Realmuto On Five-Year Deal
The Philadelphia Phillies have re-signed superstar catcher J.T. Realmuto on a five-year deal. The deal is worth a reported $115.5. He is also the third catcher in MLB catcher to sign a deal worth more than $100 million (Joe Mauer and the Twins in 2010, and Buster Posey and the Giants in 2013) Realmuto is one of, if not the, best all-around catcher in baseball. He hit .266 with 11 homers and 32 RBIs during the 2020 season.
Since being acquired by the Phillies in February of 2019, Realmuto has been terrific. In 2019, he hit .275 with 25 homers and 83 RBIs while also earning his second career All-Star selection. In addition, he led the National League while throwing out 43 runners. Realmuto also was a big piece in the Phillies playoff push.
He rejected the Phillies’ $18.9 million qualifying offer, instead, he wanted a long-term deal.
Realmuto’s Impact In Philly
J.T. Realmuto made an unquestionable impact when he joined the Phillies. Paired with Bryce Harper, they were one of the best duos in baseball. Constant production, stellar defense, and solid speed on the basepaths has Realmuto widely regarded as the best catcher in baseball. Keeping him was a must with the Phillies. Though it may be less than what was originally thought, Realmuto ultimately stays with the Phillies and can continue his contribution to keeping them competitive in an exciting NL East in 2021.
