Angles’ Ramirez Threw at Marisnick

On Tuesday night Angels relief pitcher Noe Ramirez threw a 90 mph fastball to the upper left shoulder of Astros’ Jake Marisnick. The high tension game was expected since it was the first time the teams faced off with Marisnick playing post-suspension. Marisnick was suspended due to his controversial collision with Angels catcher Jonathan Lucroy, and Ramirez at Marisnick in retaliation.

Ramirez’s Throw

Ramirez threw at Marisnick in the sixth inning on a 1-1 count and Marisnick calmly took his base after. The incident quickly escalated from there when Ramirez attempted to pickoff Marisnick at first. Angels’ first baseman Albert Pujols then left the bag and began arguing with Astros players in the dugout. Both bullpens and benches were cleared and the first base umpire to get involved. Marisnick calmed his own teammates down in the dugout. Play quickly resumed after a few moments with no physical altercations. The game ended in a 7-2 victory for the Angels.

Results of the play

Major League Baseball suspended Ramirez three games and fined him an undisclosed amount for throwing a pitch in the area of the head. Ramirez told reporters the pitch “just got away from him.” He has decided to appeal the punishment given by the MLB.

MLB has also decided to give Angels Manager Brad Ausmus a one-game suspension. Ausmus said, “I thought three games for Noe was a little bit steep, but he still has the appeals process to go through.”

Astros manager AJ Hinch made it clear he views the play as retaliation and after the game commented, “Our guy got suspended for an unintentional act, and they got a free shot.”

Angels catcher Lucroy is expected to miss three more weeks of play in order to fully recover from the concussion.
