Mets Sign Ervin Santana To A Minor-League Contract
The Mets have announced that they have signed pitcher Ervin Santana to a minor-league contract. He will report to Port St. Lucie and be a great addition to the Mets starting pitching depth. In three starts with the White Sox this season, he pitched to a record of 0-2 with a 9.45 ERA with five strikeouts. He was given his release back in April.
Santana has been in the majors since 2005. In that time, he has seen time with the Angels, Royals, Braves, Twins, and most recently the White Sox. He has a record of 149-127 with an ERA of 4.09 with 1,926 strikeouts in his career. Santana also has two All-Star game appearances; one with the Angels back in 2008, and one with the Twins back in 2017.
Mets Plans For Santana
Though it is not clear what the Mets plan to do with Santana, he will serve a great depth piece for the team. After some time in St. Lucie, Santana will most likely report to Triple-A Syracuse and report to the Mets in case of an injury. Whether he is in the bullpen or making a spot start, Santana will be a nice addition to the Mets pitching depth. Considering some of the younger arms in the Mets organization haven’t panned out quite yet, Santana could potentially be a very reliable option.
Why Santana?
Where is Craig Kimbrel? What about Dallas Keuchel? Many baseball fans are wondering how neither of them is on a team; especially Mets fans. Santana is a much better option financially, however, there are a lot of unanswered questions as to why the Mets haven’t deeply pursued either of them. If Santana doesn’t exactly pan-out for the Mets, a lot of fans are going to be upset as to why the Mets didn’t make more of an effort towards Kimbrel and/or Keuchel.
