How SWEEP It Is: Gomez Homer Gives Mets Sweep Of Nats
After the Mets season looked all but over, the team bounced back to sweep the Nationals in four games. Steven Matz got the start for the Mets in the fourth game of the series. The lefty went six innings and allowed one run on ten hits with seven strikeouts. The Nationals threatened in the first three innings but couldn’t finish the job against Matz. For the Nationals, they sent Stephen Strasburg to the hill. Strasburg went seven innings allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with five strikeouts.
Game Recap
Today’s game was a pitching duel until the fifth inning. Juan Lagares got the scoring started with a sac fly. In the sixth, Brian Dozier got the Nationals on the board with an infield single. Once the bottom half of the sixth rolled around, Pete Alonso added a sac fly and Wilson Ramos added an RBI single to make it 3-1 Mets. However, the Nationals came back on the Mets in the eighth. Yan Gomes had an RBI double and the Gerardo Parra gave the Nationals a 4-3 lead with a two-run single. Then in the bottom half of the inning, the Nationals bullpen blew yet another game. Carlos Gomez came up with two runners on and blasted a go-ahead three-run homer off Wander Suero. Edwin Díaz would come in and lock down his 12th save of the season.
What’s Next For The Mets
Next up, the Mets welcome in the Detroit Tigers for a three-game set. Tomorrow’s game will feature Noah Syndergaard (3-4 with a 4.50 ERA) against rookie-Gregory Soto (0-2 with a 10.80 ERA). Game two of the series will showcase Jason Vargas in his return from the IL (1-2 with a 5.92 ERA) against a Tiger starter TBD. And finally, the final game of the series will feature Zack Wheeler (3-3 with a 4.74 ERA) against Spencer Turnball (2-3 with a 2.68 ERA).
Roster Updates
The Mets had a few roster updates throughout the day today. First off, the Mets have claimed outfielder Aaron Altherr from the Giants and DFA’d reliever Tim Peterson. Altherr slashed .033/.065/.067 with no homers and one RBI in 30 at-bats. He will primarily serve as outfield depth for the Mets.
In addition, the Mets announced that Yoenis Cespedes is officially done for the 2019 season. He underwent surgery on his ankle after taking a fall on his ranch in Florida.
