Alonso Wins National League Rookie Of The Month For April

After an amazing start to his Major League career, Pete Alonso was announced as the National League Rookie of the Month for April. Through the first month of the season (29 total games), Alonso slashed .291/.383/.627 with nine homers, eight doubles, and 26 RBIs. Alonso’s nine homers are good for first among ALL rookies and his 26 RBIs were the third most in MLB history by a rookie in April. He also added his first career walk-off with a sac fly against the Reds earlier this week.

Pete Alonso On Offense

Offensively, Alonso has been everything the Mets had hoped for. After his first month in the Majors, Alonso ranked sixth in the NL in WAR (1.7), fifth among position players, fourth in Offensive WAR, and sixth in homers and slugging percentage. He also leads the Mets in runs scored, RBIs, homers, and OPS. Alonso has fit in quite nicely and has shown that he can be one of the most dangerous bats in the Mets lineup.

Pete Alonso On Defense

One of the biggest reasons Alonso was not a September call-up last year was because of his defense. The Mets wanted him to develop his defense at first just a little bit more before they made him their everyday first baseman. At first base, Alonso has only committed two errors and has displayed a .989 fielding percentage. He has also made some great diving and hustling plays that have resulted in huge outs for the Mets.

Can He Keep Up This Pace?

Alonso has cooled off of late, however, Alonso is still a huge threat in the middle of the Mets daily lineup. At first, it was thought he would split time with Dom Smith, but Alonso has proven himself to be an everyday player. He will be a huge factor in the Mets run to get back to the postseason. The Mets have a really special player and assuming he can stay off the injured list, Alonso will be the guy the Mets look towards in key situations.
