Mets Weekly Wrap-Up #5: Matz And Wheeler Have Arrived
Another week of Mets baseball has come and gone and Mets pitching has continued to be an interesting aspect of their team. Even though Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard have struggled of late, Steven Matz and Zack Wheeler have stepped up for the Mets. They are finally starting to break out and live up to the hype surrounding them in their young careers.
Steven Matz
Steven Matz has been arguably the best pitcher in the Mets rotation so far this season. He is currently 3-1 with a 3.68 ERA, has 29 strikeouts and holds opponents to an average of .220. He gave the Mets a great boost today with a win over the Milwaukee Brewers. He went seven innings allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts. With the exception of his outing against the Phillies (in which he failed to record an out), Matz has not given up more than three runs in a start. Matz is starting to finally look like the star-lefty they were hoping for. A finally fully healthy Steven Matz is a huge boost to the Mets rotation.
Zack Wheeler
Along with Steven Matz, Zack Wheeler is finally fully healthy. Wheeler has been good for the Mets this year with a record of 2-2 with a 4.85 ERA, 33 strikeouts, and a WHIP of 1.35. After a rocky first two start against the Nationals, Wheelers has been great over his past few starts. His last start against the Phillies was perhaps one of the best in his career as he went seven innings allowing no runs on five hits with 11 strikeouts. Wheeler has been so much better over his past few starts and will look to continue that for the rest of 2019.
What To Expect From Matz And Wheeler Next Week
Steven Matz and Zack Wheeler will look to continue their momentum into this week. Matz will take on the Brewers again in Milwaukee on Friday, and Zack Wheeler will face the Reds and Brewers Monday night and Saturday respectively. These two were the dark horses for the Mets this year and they both have exceeded expectations. Once deGrom and Syndergaard get back on track, the Mets rotation is one of the best in baseball.
