As the 2019 season is underway, we will look back each week at how the Mets were overall. We will also look at what to expect from the team in the near future and any news/updates from the week. The Mets opened the 2019 season in D.C. to take on their division rival Washington Nationals.
Mets Win Opening Series Against The Nats
The Mets are off to a strong start to the season as they took 2/3 from the Nationals this past weekend. They secured an Opening Day win by a score of 2-0 on Opening Day. Robinson Canó hit a solo homer to start off his Mets career and added an RBI single in the eighth inning. On the mound, Jacob deGrom was back to his dominant self with six scoreless innings and ten strikeouts. Among the new faces on the team, rookie Pete Alonso picked up his first MLB hit and Edwin Díaz locked down his first save of the year.
On Saturday, the Mets offense came to play in an 11-8 win over Washington. The team collected 14 total hits; including three from Pete Alonso, and four from utility-man Jeff McNeil. Noah Syndergaard pitched for the first time this season as he allowed four runs over six innings with seven strikeouts. Justin Wilson made his Mets debut with a scoreless inning of work, and Seth Lugo made his season debut and allowed four runs from the Nationals. Lugo threw 41 pitches and the Nats took advantage of it. However, Edwin Díaz came in and threw one pitch to secure his second save of the season.
On Sunday, the Mets lost their first game of the season. Trea Turner hit the walk-off homer off Justin Wilson to give the Nationals a 6-5 win. Zack Wheeler was a little shaky in his season debut as he allowed four runs over five innings. However, Wheeler did strike out seven and only walked one batter. The Mets offense was quiet until they rallied to tie the game at five in the eighth inning. Juan Lagares tied the game with an RBI single after big hits from shortstop Amed Rosario and catcher Wilson Ramos.
What Is Next For The Mets?
The Mets will head to Miami to take on the Marlins for the first time this year. Steven Matz and Jason Vargas are set to make their season debuts for the team. After that, the Mets will head back to Citi Field for their home opener as they welcome the Washington Nationals.
