Giants Shutout By Padres On Opening Day

We have seen it a lot in the last few seasons. And it’s a sight we should probably get used to seeing a lot more in 2019. A great performance from Madison Bumgarner was overshadowed by the lack of offense from the Giants in their 2-0 loss to the Padres on Opening Day.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Giants looked great. Especially from their ace Madison Bumgarner. The left-hander mixed his pitches well all afternoon. His only mistake on the afternoon came to Wil Myers who launched one over the beach in right-center field. Bumgarner’s 5th Opening Day start of his career finished with 7 Innings Pitched, 5 Hits, 2 Runs, 1 Walk, and 9 Strikeouts.

The offensive side for the Giants, however, looked not great. Padres pitcher Eric Lauer was great, going 6 Innings, allowing 4 Hits, 0 Runs, 1 Walk, and 3 Strikeouts. The fears of a struggling offense came to fruition today as the team only managed five hits, one of those coming from Bumgarner. The team only got one person to second base. No base runners from the Giants would make it past second. The top of the lineup featuring Duggar and Belt especially disappointed. Going a combined 0-for-8 on the day. Longoria looks to have a nice bounce-back year as he led the lineup with 2 hits on the day.

In his press conference after the game, Bruce Bochy said he will probably mix up the lineup for tomorrows game. We should see changes to the outfield and movement in line up placement all over the One through Nine spots that to happen a lot as Bochy tries to learn what he’s working with on his 25 man roster.

The Giants are looking to bounce back tomorrow against the Padres. It will be Derek Holland taking the hill for the Giants going up against Joey Lucchesi for the Padres.
