Mets Injury Updates: Todd Frazier and Jed Lowrie
As 2019 Spring Training starts to get underway, the injury-bug is already back to plague the Mets. The latest victims are third baseman Todd Frazier and infielder Jed Lowrie. Frazier was diagnosed with an oblique strain on Monday. He left the team and is back in New York to receive a cortisone shot. The Mets are uncertain of when Todd Frazier will be able to return to the team. With Jed Lowrie, he has yet to start any baseball activities with his new team. Lowrie has a capsule strain in his left knee; which could sideline him anywhere from two weeks to six weeks. With this news, the Mets could very well head into Opening Day down two infielders. The depth pieces that Brodie Van Wagenen acquired this offseason will quickly be put to the test.
The Positive Outlook: Pete Alonso
It may seem like it, but Mets fans can take some positives from these injuries. Of course, fans want both of these guys back as quickly as possible, but fans also went them to stay off the injured list as much as possible. Let’s take a look at a hypothetical here:
Assuming both guys are out for Opening Day, this opens up opportunities for guys like Keon Broxton and Juan Lagares to get outfield reps while Jeff McNeil (who was expected to get placed in the outfield) can move into the third base slot until both guys are healthy. That still leaves a hole at first base; and an opportunity for Pete Alonso. Mets fans have been waiting a long time for him to join the Major League team. With both of these injuries, Alonso could very well find himself on the MLB roster for Opening Day and show what he can do. Either way, the fans have no need to worry. It’s too early to press the panic button on what is expected to be an amazin’ season for the Mets.
