Machado Agrees to Deal with Padres

According to reports by Jeff Passan and Mark Feinsand, free agent star Manny Machado has decided to play baseball this year. He has reportedly  agreed to a 10 year, 300 million dollar contract from the San Diego Padres. The contract is the largest in free agent history. But expect that to change in a few days.

The White Sox were also in on the Manny Machado sweepstakes until the very end. Reports are that Chicago’s offer of 8 years, 250 million to come to the south side was not enough. This even though it would be a higher AAV than the Padres contract, including incentives that could have reached up to 300 million. White Sox Executive Vice President Kenny Williams, surprised by Manny’s decision, later said, “I’m wearing my shades so you don’t see my shocked eyes”.

Padres A Good Fit?

After years of rebuilding and being, essentially, a non-factor every year, it appears the Padres are the next up and coming team in the league. A year ago they acquired Eric Hosmer in free agency and were named the number one farm system in the league by MLB Pipeline. This Machado move shows the Padres are finally serious about competing again.

Machado A Good Fit?

Of course, there are questions that come with Manny. Questions about his reputation in the clubhouse and with teammates, as well as on the field. There was his play in the playoffs last year, stepping on the back of the first baseman’s foot running to first; and of course his infamous “I’m not Johnny Hustle” comments that led many people to question his work ethic and attitude. But in the end, his ugly side did not cost him. Machado will get the 300 million guaranteed that he was always after.

Now, with the Chargers gone, the Padres are the main attraction in San Diego. And it appears ownership is looking to capitalize on that open market. With the Giants starting to trend down and the D-Backs selling everything off, the timing appears right for a San Diego resurgence.
