Red Sox Sign Former-Met Jenrry Mejia To A Minor-League Contract
The defending-World Series champion Boston Red Sox have signed pitcher Jenrry Mejia to a minor-league contract. The 29-year-old was with the Mets from 2010 until the 2015 season. During that time, Mejia was suspended three times for PED violations and eventually was banned from Major League Baseball. Since then, Mejia has been reinstated and was later released by the Mets. Prior to being banned, Mejia was 9-14 with an ERA of 3.68 along with 162 strikeouts and 28 saves with the Mets.
Assuming everything works out, signing Mejia was a great move for the Red Sox. The Red Sox are not likely to re-sign Craig Kimbrel and have been known to struggle in the bullpen at points in the past. Therefore, signing Mejia may prove to be a big help to the Red Sox bullpen this season. Mejia has closer and starter experience and can prove to play a vital role in the Red Sox season in 2019. If Mejia has a solid Spring Training, he could find himself on the Red Sox Opening Day roster.
Mejia Signing Brings Some Controversy
With free agents such as Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, and Dallas Keuchal still available, the signing of Jenrry Mejia has brought up a lot of controversies. Free-agent reliever Peter Moylan was very upset with the signing. Earlier today, Moylan tweeted, “Hows my offseason going? This guy had a lifetime ban and still signed before me!! #wtf.” Many others were left wondering the same thing. Not just the fact that Mejia signed before them, but that he signed somewhere at all. Red Sox GM Dave Dombrowski said, “He pitched last season and was free from PEDs. We are hopeful that he has learned from his past mistakes.” Amid the controversy, Mejia will look to bounce-back in 2019.
