Mets Get Bullpen Help With Lefty Reliever Justin Wilson

Earlier this week, the Mets signed lefty reliever Justin Wilson to a two-year contract worth $10 million. Wilson serves an additional depth arm in the Mets much-improved bullpen. He has previously spent time with the Pirates, Yankees, Tigers, and this past season with the Cubs. Wilson had a solid 2018 campaign. He finished with a record of 4-5 with a 3.46 ERA, 69 strikeouts, and a WHIP of 1.43 in 54 and 2/3 innings pitched. Over his career, Wilson brings a record of 26-19 with a 3.33 ERA and 407 strikeouts in 370 and 2/3 innings to the Mets.

He’ll serve primarily in the late-innings and in high-leverage situations in 2019. Paired with Edwin Diaz and Jeurys Familia, Wilson gives the Mets a solid trio to close out games. Wilson also has 14 saves in his career; should the Mets choose to give rest to Diaz or Familia on a given night. One of the biggest issues for the Mets was in the bullpen. Wilson only adds to solving the problem for the Mets. GM Brodie Van Wagenen said he wanted to eliminate any “ifs” on the roster; so far he has worked to do such. The Mets bullpen will look to stack-up with any team in the National League come 2019 as Wilson will be paired with presumably Diaz, Familia, Robert Gsellman, Seth Lugo, Hector Santiago, and others.

Infielder Gavin Cecchini DFA’d By Mets

In response to signing Justin Wilson, the Mets have DFA’d infielder Gavin Cecchini. Cecchini, 25, made his MLB debut back in 2016. In his career, he has batted .217 with one homer, nine RBI’s and six runs scored. Cecchini was used off the bench when he was with the Mets but missed most of 2018 after fouling a ball off his foot. If no one claims Cecchini, the Mets can still outright him to Triple-A Syracuse.
