Mets Release Suspended Pitcher Jenrry Mejia
After serving three suspensions for PEDs, the Mets have released pitcher Jenrry Mejia from their roster. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred announced the Mejia could be eligible to return to the Mets in the 2019 season. The Mets used Mejia primarily as their closer. Though he was great as a starter, the Mets used him as more of a bullpen weapon for most of the time. His three positive drug tests dated back to 2015. His first suspension was 80 games at the beginning of the 2015 season, and his return would last just seven games before he got suspended again. The second suspension was 162 games. The third suspension resulted in Mejia being banned for life from Major League Baseball. Mejia will look to land elsewhere in Major League Baseball before exploring any “outside options.”
Mejia STOMP
When Jenrry Mejia first burst on the scene, fans were excited to see what he could do. His break out seasons in 2013 and 2014 opened the eyes of everyone. His signature “Mejia STOMP” when he closed games added some much-needed excitement to that Mets team. In 2014, Mejia saved 28 games for the Mets. He pitched to the tune of a 3.65 ERA with 98 strikeouts and a record of 6-6. Before his first suspension in 2015, Mejia was looking to continue his success. Due to his first suspension, he finished 2015 with a record of 1-0 an ERA of 0.00, seven strikeouts, and two walks in 7 1/3 innings pitched. After his reinstatement, Mejia has been working to get back with the Mets in 2019. The Mets, obviously, had other ideas with Mejia. They did not want to take a chance on Mejia who was already suspended three times by the MLB. He’ll finish his career with the Mets with a record of 9-14, an ERA of 3.68, 162 strikeouts, and 28 saves in 183 1/3 innings pitched.
