Yankees Drop Game One to Rival Red Sox, 5-4
Last night, the Yankees dropped a nail-biter to the Red Sox at Fenway Park. The Yankees look to bounce back in the second game tonight. On the mound was J.A. Happ. Happ struggled as he lasted just two innings while allowing four hits, five runs, one walk, and two strikeouts. The Yankees bullpen held the Red Sox silent the rest of the way after Happ was removed from the game. On the Red Sox side, Chris Sale was his usual dominant self. Sale went 5.1 innings allowing two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out eight.
Game Recap
The Red Sox offense got off to a fast start after an Andrew Benintendi single and a Steve Pearce walk. Then MVP-hopeful JD Martinez launched a three-run homer over the Green Monster in left field. The Red Sox weren’t done yet. In the third, Steve Pearce singled home Mookie Betts and then Xander Bogaerts hit a sac-fly to score Benintendi. The score would stand at 5-0 Red Sox until the sixth inning.
Luke Voit got the Yankees offense started with an RBI single, followed by a Didi Gregorious RBI groundout. In the seventh, Luke Voit added another RBI with a groundout scoring Andrew McCutchen. The score was 5-3 heading into the ninth. With Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel on the hill, Aaron Judge led off the ninth with a solo shot to make it 5-4. Kimbrel would then proceed to strike out Brett Gardner, Giancarlo Stanton, and Luke Voit to secure a Red Sox opening game win.
Yankees Look for Bounce-Back in Game Two
It was clear last night that the Yankees are going to have to get to Red Sox starters early if they want to win this series. The Yankees finally got going against Boston’s bullpen, but could not figure out Chris Sale. Assuming the Yankees can get their offense going early, they have a great chance to get past the best team in baseball.
