Mets Fans Say Farewell To David Wright
Saturday, September 29th, 2018 will be a day Mets fans will never forget. New York Mets Captain David Wright took the field for the final time in his MLB career. Wright’s career gave fans countless memories that they will never forget. Saturday night was another memory to add to the miraculous 14-year career. Before the game got underway, David Wright’s daughter, Olivia Shea Wright, threw out the ceremonial first pitch to her father, David Wright. After the first pitch, emotions began to quickly rise for Wright and Mets fans in attendance.
Game Recap
As the Mets took to the field to start the game, David Wright took the field all alone. The sell-out crowd at Citi Field rose to their feet as Captain America took to the diamond one last time. Shortly after, Jose Reyes came out to greet Wright and play shortstop along-side his “brother.” The rest of the Mets took the field as all eyes were on the left side of the field. Wright would finish the game 0-1 with a walk and a pop-out.
Steven Matz got the ball for the Mets and went six brilliant innings. Matz allowed no runs on three hits, one walk, and eight strikeouts. Matz lowered his ERA to 3.97 as he closes out his rebound 2018-campaign. For the Marlins, Trevor Richards got the start. Richards went 6 2/3 allowing six hits, two walks, and also struck out eight. This game was a pitcher’s duel until extra innings. Austin Jackson doubled home Michael Conforto and the Mets won David Wright Day 1-0!
Tearful Goodbyes
As the top of the fifth inning rolled around, it was time for Wright’s exit. Mickey Callaway come out of the dugout to make the switch. Mets fans immediately rose to their feet as their hero was walking off of a baseball field for one final time. Chants of “Thank You David” grew louder and louder as Wright tipped his cap to the fans. Not a dry eye was in the stadium or on the field. As Wright shook hands with each teammate one-by-one, you could see the tears forming in Wright’s eyes. Wright’s exit was one for the ages as “Triumphant Return” from the movie Captain America played in the background. Wright exited the field for the last time and proceeded to the broadcast booth in uniform to talk on the Mets TV/Radio Broadcast. Wright even came out of the booth and took a group selfie with a section of fans cheering his name. A true class act!

After the game, Wright returned to the field to yet another standing ovation to give his final speech to Mets fans. “This is love. I mean I can’t say anything else, this is love.” Wright finished his speech and made one final salute to the fans. It was officially the last time Mets fans would see David Wright on a Major League Baseball field. The Captain’s triumphant return had sadly come to a close.
