Cubs Avoid The Sweep, Go For Series Split Tomorrow Against Arizona

The first two games against the Diamondbacks were not pretty games. Losing the first game by a score of 7-1 and game number two by a score of 5-1. Today though the Cubs came back and were looking to get off the swept path and they did. Jon Lester goes six strong innings but gets a no-decision and Ben Zobrist chips in, in the absence of Javier Baez. However, even though he didn’t start, Baez had a lot to do with the win drawing a wild throw to first allowing Chatwood to score. Letting the Cubs avoid the sweep, and get a chance to split the series.

Jon Lester Dominates In Six Strong Innings

In his last start, Jon had one of his worse starts giving up eight earned runs in just three innings of work. So, Jon needed a strong start, so he doesn’t go down a path and start struggling. Which is something this Cubs rotation can’t afford with the injuries to the pen and the starting rotation. Giving up just four hits, walking zero and striking out seven, big Jon looked on point. Minus the solo HR to lead off the seventh inning by A.J Pollock that gave Jon the no-decision. Hopefully, tomorrow Chatwood can follow the good outing he had last time. And maybe the change of something new from the Cubs righty.

Offense Plays Small Ball And Scores Winning Run On Error

The Cubs offense right before the All-Star Break was scoring runs as no one has seen before. Now, they are back to small ball, having trouble scoring more than three runs in their losses. And more than five in almost all of their wins. Their first run came on a single to centerfield by Ben Zobrist that gave the Cubs the lead. Holding that 1-0 lead until the seventh inning off an A.J Pollock solo home run that tied the game. The winning run came on a Jason Heyward force out that scored Tyler Chatwood giving the Cubs the ultimate 2-1 win.

Player Of The Game

Player of the game today no doubt goes to Jon Lester. Coming back from a horrific start last time out. Jon came back cool, calm and collected to help the Cubs avoid the sweep against Arizona. Hopefully, Chatwood can follow Jon tomorrow and keep the string of wins going.
