Rookie Matt Skole Homers In Loss To The Indians
The Chicago White Sox jumped out to an early lead against the Indians on Memorial Day but quickly squandered it. Ultimately losing the game 9-6. Despite the loss, there were some bright spots in the game such as rookie Matt Skole homering in his second major league at-bat.
The White Sox sent Dylan Covey to the mound and he pitched fairly well until he ran into trouble in the 4th. After giving up 2 runs through 4, he loaded the bases in the 5th and the bullpen did him no favors. Although Luis Avilan came in for one batter and did get an out, Chris Volstad and Jace Fry came in and gave up runs.
Skole’s Debut
Matt Skole got the call-up today as White Sox slugger Matt Davidson had been placed on the DL after re-aggravating a back injury. Skole kicked things off with a bang. Starting with a first-pitch single in the second inning for his first major league hit.
Skole followed things up by smoking a home run to right field in the 4th inning. He finished the game going 2 for 3 with one walk and a strikeout. A pretty solid day for the rookie Matt Skole.
Other Notable White Sox Performances
Despite Skole stealing most of the show, Adam Engel and Charlie Tilson also turned in some solid performances. Tilson went 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI. Adam Engel also appears to be heating up. The Sox centerfielder went 2 for 4 and also had an RBI.
This improvement at the plate is welcoming. No lead, especially with the White Sox, is considered safe. Although only pitching 1 inning, Hector Santiago also did a solid job out of the pen, getting one strikeout in the process.
The Flip Side
It was another losing effort for the Sox. Injuries have plagued the starting rotation, which has not been great either, and the bullpen isn’t really helping. The pen has been a trouble spot for the Sox this season and it continued to be so today. Even Jace Fry gave up his first earned run of the season.
It is also worth noting that Michael Brantley extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a hit in the first inning off of Dylan Covey.
