Mike Montgomery Gets First Win In Dominant Outing
Mike Montgomery gets first win and looked like he had been a starting pitcher his entire career. He was on point with his command throwing 76 pitches, 54 of them ended up being strikes. There was a lot of positives from Montgomery’s start. And if he were to have to make another start in place of Darvish, and have the same impact he had today. There would be no doubt in my mind that he would have a good chance at a starting spot. The offense came to play today as well, scoring seven runs on twelve hits. It seems the offense is finally starting to come together, the only thing left is to hope it sticks.
Captain Monty Duels And Makes Good Case For Starting Spot
So, we all know how good Mike Montgomery is. However, most of us weren’t expecting him to have the type of start that he had. At one point he had a perfect game bid through 5 innings, he let it go later that inning. However, the fact he was able to do that well in the first place is very reassuring. Knowing that we have a reliable long man that can hold a team to a run or less. He was also able to dominate the Pirates back on August 28th, 2017. Montgomery’s final line that day- 7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO. Notice how he didn’t walk a single player in that start either? That will be a huge influencing factor for Joe if Monty can do that one more time.
Mike Montgomery Final Line- 5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO
Anthony Rizzo And The Offense Go Off Against Pittsburgh
After a strong showing in yesterdays 8-3 victory over the Giants. The Cubs were looking to keep the offense rolling, and that’s precisely what they did. Scoring seven runs on twelve hits is a good sign. And shows me The Cubs are starting to come together and that they are starting to capitalize with men on base. Which to me has been the biggest blunder in the offense so far. If The Cubs could start hitting with RISP, we would see this team begin to rise in the division. Ranking fifth in the league in AVG just one point behind Houston makes me feel better about the overall shape of The Cubs team.
Consistency has been another problem this year, but The Cubs have been getting a lot better at it. And it showed against today, Anthony Rizzo lead off the scoring with a solo home run. The score stayed there until the seventh inning when Addison Russell launched a two-run home run to extend the Cubs lead to 3-0. Cubs scored two more runs on a throwing error by the catcher Elias Diaz. Anthony Rizzo finished off the scoring with a two-run single back up the middle to make the score 7-0.
Player Of The Game
In a spot that could have easily gone the other way for this player. He handled himself well, even when he had men on base. Player of the game goes to Mike Montgomery, winning pitcher of today’s game. Coming in a significant start after Chatwood was only able to go 2.2 IP, Mike Montgomery gets first win and dominates the pirates in near flawless 5.2 IP of baseball. I’ve always thought this kid would make a good starter and he keeps reinforcing my beliefs on why he should be.
