Layne Riggs to Take Over FRM No. 38 Craftsman Truck Series Ride
MOORESVILLE, N.C. – One of the most successful teams in recent Truck Series memory has found a new driver. Front Row Motorsports has named Layne Riggs to drive their No. 38 Ford F-150. This will be a multi-year agreement starting in 2024.
The second-generation racer comes from a winning pedigree and has already set his own victorious path. Layne is the son of longtime NASCAR driver Scott Riggs, and has already made his presence known in limited National Series starts. The 21-year-old now makes the big jump up from the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series to a full-time Craftsman Truck Series ride.
The Bahama, N.C. native is the next FRM development driver, following the footsteps of both Todd Gilliland and Zane Smith. Each of these aforementioned drivers have taken the No. 38 F-150 to victory lane. Smith also earned the 2022 Truck Series championship.
2024 will be Riggs’ first full-time NASCAR opportunity of any kind. He does however already have valuable experience in the Weekly division. Layne took this prestigious short track racing championship in 2022. He spent 2023 cherry-picking limited opportunities in Trucks and Xfinity competition. Riggs turned heads by finishing third in August at IRP in the Trucks. He backed up that performance with Xfinity Series results of 10th and 11th at Las Vegas and Martinsville respectively.
“I’m really thankful for this opportunity to compete full-time in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series with one of the best teams in the sport,” said Riggs. “I’ve dedicated my life for an opportunity like this, and I’m incredibly appreciative of Bob (Jenkins) and everyone at Front Row for providing me the opportunity to take my next step in my racing career.”
Past team engineer Dylan Cappello will become the 38’s new crew chief. Chris Lawson vacates this position to serve as a team consultant while also dedicating time to other non-racing ventures.
In addition to racing, Riggs is also on track to complete a Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) alongside competing full-time.
“I really appreciate Layne’s dedication to his education while also competing at the highest levels,” commented Bob Jenkins, FRM’s owner. “That comes from great parenting and a sense of dedication from Layne. We’ve already seen a lot of potential in Layne. He’s a perfect fit for our program to develop him into a National Series NASCAR winner.”
Riggs will be joining a top-tier Truck Series team where wins and championship contention have become the norm. The FRM No. 38 is the two-time defending winner of the Daytona season opener. They have also been the only Truck Series winners at COTA, taking this road course win with Gilliland (2021) and Smith (2022-2023) alike. Riggs may be slow to adapt to Truck racing on bigger tracks with their aero-dependancy. However, a short track win and Playoff berth are not out of the question for this team.
FRM will reveal Riggs’ sponsors at a later date. His first outing in this new ride will be an FRM threepeat quest in the Fresh From Florida 250 at Daytona. The 2024 season kicks off Friday, February 16 on FS1, MRN, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90.
