Jimmie Johnson to Not Compete in Chicago Street Race

STATESVILLE, N.C. – Legacy Motor Club said Tuesday that team co-owner Jimmie Johnson will not race in Sunday’s Chicago Street Race. Johnson was scheduled to make his fourth start of 2023 in the No. 84 Carvana Chevrolet Camaro.

“LEGACY MOTOR CLUB has elected to withdraw the No. 84 Carvana Chevrolet from this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series event in Chicago,” a team statement said.

“The Johnson family has asked for privacy at this time and no further statements will be made.”

According to FOX23 News from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Johnson’s parents in law, Jack and Terry Janway, were both found dead in their home. Police say their grandson and Johnson’s nephew Dalton, 11, was also found dead. Detectives say this case is being investigated as a murder-suicide.

“We are saddened by the tragic deaths of members of Chandra Johnson’s family,” NASCAR said in a statement. “The entire NASCAR family extends its deepest support and condolences during this difficult time to Chandra, Jimmie and the entire Johnson & Janway families.”

Chicago was going to be Johnson’s fourth NASCAR Cup Series start of 2023. This was set to follow the Daytona 500, COTA, and the Coca-Cola 600. The seven-time champion had crashed out of all three prior starts this year, with a best result of 31st.
