Injured Chase Elliott Won’t Race in Pennzoil 400, Josh Berry to Drive No. 9

UPDATE: Elliott suffered a fractured tibia and underwent a successful surgery Friday night. He is currently in recovery with no timeline for a return. Hendrick Motorsports has applied for a Playoff waiver for Elliott.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – 2020 NASCAR Cup Series Champion Chase Elliott will not compete Sunday from Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The Georgia native injured his left leg snowboarding in Colorado, and will have surgery tonight. In his place in the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro will be Xfinity Series driver Josh Berry.

“Chase’s health is our primary concern,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. “He’s spoken with several members of our team and is understandably disappointed to miss time in the car. Of course, he has our full support, and we’ll provide any resources he needs. We hope to share another update later this weekend.”

Berry, 32, is a two-time Xfinity Series winner at Las Vegas and has made two prior Cup starts. Berry will be going for a second-straight Las Vegas win Saturday, ahead of making his substitution start on Sunday. Team Hendrick hopes to have an update later this weekend.
