Kurt Busch Not Clear to Return to Racing Competition, Will Continue to Work
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Kurt Busch answered a question about potentially returning part-time to the NASCAR Cup Series at Friday’s NASCAR Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Busch, 44, says he’s still not been cleared by doctors to return after a July qualifying crash at Pocono Raceway caused the 23XI Racing No. 45 driver to miss the remainder of the 2022 season with a concussion. As a result, he announced his retirement from full-time competition in October.
With this update, Busch currently has no set plans for a return but it’s clear his team and partners have continued to support him in the possibility.
“The family with Toyota, the family with Monster Energy, it’s there,” Kurt Busch said. “I’m just still not approved to race yet at the competition level. But, I’ll still keep pushing.”
Busch went on to say NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Hershel McGriff was his new motivator. McGriff, 95, holds the record for the oldest driver to compete in a NASCAR-sanctioned event at age 90. He’s rather jokingly said that a start at age 100 may be in his future.
“Hershel McGriff is now my new motivator of kicking ass and getting to a better state of racing,” Busch said. “What an amazing individual…I’ll keep pushing. You know me, I don’t give up.”
