Ty Gibbs Takes Command Late at Michigan for Win Five of 2022

BROOKLYN, Mich. – Ty Gibbs took his series-best fifth Xfinity win of 2022 Saturday at Michigan. While JR Motorsports drivers were dominant early, the final Stage was young Gibbs’ time to shine. Gibbs’ ninth career win is his first at Michigan. This also marks the first victory for the 19-year-old since making his Cup Series debut two weeks ago at Pocono. Is Gibbs now the man to beat for this championship with the most wins?

Starting on pole, Noah Gragson led wire-to-wire in Stage 1. This opening run was not without challenge for the 9, as teammate Justin Allgaier closed in late. Allgaier would lead for much of Stage 2, only being passed late by AJ Allmendinger. On the last lap of the Stage though, Allmendinger’s 16 was just edged out at the line by Gragson in a photo finish.

Staying out to win Stage 2 cost Gragson, as he had to pit under the Stage break. Inheriting the lead for Stage 3’s start would be Ty Gibbs. With the entirety of the final Stage being caution-free, Gibbs’ 54 checked out from the pack. Gibbs eventually took the win over Justin Allgaier by a second, while Gragson rebounded to finish third.

“We had a very fast Monster Energy GR Supra,” Gibbs said. “I’m so excited. I think this style of racing shows the strategy and the pit stops. It’s pretty spread out. But my guys did a great job and the pit crew worked so hard. I workout with them during the week and I see how hard they work, every one of them. They do a great job and my cousin is pitting now too so it’s cool to see my family involved. All glory to God and thank you to my team, Monster Energy, TRD, Sport Clips, Interstate Batteries. My car was faster than Xfinity high speed internet, just kidding it wasn’t that fast.”

Behind Gibbs, Allgaier, and Gragson, Brandon Jones and Austin Hill were in the top five. Josh Berry, AJ Allmendinger, Daniel Hemric, Riley Herbst, and Landon Cassill were the top 10.

Five races are left in the Xfinity Series regular season, as Gibbs’ fifth win only further secures him as the top seed. See the rest of the provisional Playoff standings below, as seven contenders have wins through 21 races.

The Xfinity Series will be back in action from Watkins Glen in two weeks. Coverage of the Watkins Glen Xfinity race is Saturday, August 20 at 3:00 p.m. ET on USA Network, MRN, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90. With Ty Gibbs as the defending winner here, his chances at back-to-back victories are high. However, AJ Allmendinger is undefeated on road courses this year, as he looks for his first Xfinity win at the Glen.
