Gio Ruggiero Takes Maiden NASCAR Wins at Talladega
TALLADEGA, Ala. – Never a stranger to first-time Truck Series winners, Talladega Superspeedway delivered another young driver a career-defining day. Leading a race-high 37 laps from the pole, 19-year-old rookie Gio Ruggiero had his moment in the spotlight on racing’s hallowed ground. The TRICON Garage driver joins teammate Corey Heim as race winners this season, with Toyotas sweeping Daytona and Talladega.
Stage 1 saw Playoff contender Rajah Caruth pick up his first Stage win of the season. He was likewise a corner away from sweeping both segments. Polesitter Gio Ruggiero made a last pass on Caruth’s No. 71 for the Stage 2 checkers. The opening laps were not kind to a few other Playoff drivers, with Grant Enfinger and Layne Riggs both running into early issues. They both head to next week’s cut race below the cut line.

Following the final round of green flag pit stops, Ruggiero cycled back to the point inside of 25 laps left. The No. 17 TRICON Garage Toyota briefly lost the lead to past champion Ben Rhodes. The 99 went spinning from the lead, however, sending this race into overtime.

On the final two-lap sprint, Ruggiero got enough of a jump to remain unchallenged up front. The teenage racing prodigy now joins the list of Truck Series winners with his most impressive rookie outing yet.
“It feels great, I’m so thankful to be here,” Ruggiero said. “Just super thankful for all the guys on this 17 truck. They work their asses off, definitely brought the best piece today and we showed it in qualifying. There throughout the race we definitely had the fastest piece. Just thanks to everybody at Toyota and everyone who supports me, it’s great to win a race with my mom and dad here as well.”
Following a TRICON Garage 1-2-3 finish at the Charlotte Roval, Corey Heim made it a second-straight top-two sweep. Reigning champion Ty Majeski was third, just edging out Dawson Sutton and contender Layne Riggs. The rest of the Talladega top-10 were: Tyler Ankrum, Matt Crafton, Corey Lajoie, Rajah Caruth, and Kaden Honeycutt. Hear from a few of these drivers below.

Thanks to Ruggiero not being a Playoff contender, three Championship 4 berths remain up for grabs. Following his major Stage points from Talladega, Rajah Caruth is best of the rest heading into Friday night’s cut race.

The final three contenders to make Phoenix will be set after 200 laps around Martinsville Speedway. The Slim Jim 200 will see seven contenders enter with a shot but only three leave on good terms. The Half-Mile of Mayhem will go green Friday at 6 p.m. ET on FS1, NRN, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
