Parents of Denny Hamlin Suffer House Fire, Dennis Hamlin Dead at Age 75
STANLEY, N.C. – NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin’s father is dead and his mother is seriously injured after a catastrophic house fire. Hamlin’s parents’ home, located in a Charlotte suburb, caught fire Sunday night.
75-year-old Dennis Hamlin and Mary Lou Hamlin, 69, both “suffered catastrophic injuries while escaping the flames,” said Gaston County emergency responders. Dennis was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Mary Lou, meanwhile, continues to recover at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Health Burn Center in Winston-Salem. She is being treated for reported life-threatening injuries.
Dennis Hamlin was terminally ill, forcing him unable to travel to Phoenix Raceway in November to watch Hamlin compete for the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series title. The Joe Gibbs Racing No. 11 Progressive Toyota dominated that day but ultimately finished as title runner-up to Kyle Larson. Hamlin said throughout that weekend it would likely be the last time his father would be alive to see a championship race.
Deepest condolences to the Hamlin family and everyone affected by this horrific tragedy.

Denny Hamlin gives all credit to both of his parents for getting him started in racing at an early age. This included making significant financial sacrifices to keep him going on short tracks across the southeast before he was discovered by Joe Gibbs Racing.
“He’s the one that got me into racing,” Denny Hamlin said after his 60th career Cup victory at Las Vegas in October. “He just took me to a racetrack when I was 5 [and] then made all the sacrifices financially to keep me going. Sold everything they had. We almost lost our house a couple times, just tried to keep it all going.”
When Hamlin was just getting his start racing at a local level, his dad owned a trailer and hitch shop while his mother sold insurance.
“My parents had no money [for racing],” Denny said after the Vegas win. “My parents had very normal jobs, but they found a way. That way is a path I would never recommend anybody taking. Every credit card that comes to the mail — okay, we’ll use it.”
“Asking people to help. Second and third mortgaging the house. All these things. The arguments I had to listen to — I’m in my room, and my mom and dad are going at it. One is saying, ‘I can’t do it anymore.’ The other one saying, ‘Please, just one more week.’ It’s great it’s all paid off.”
The month since Phoenix has seen Hamlin spend two weeks in a federal courthouse. The 23XI Racing co-owner was suing NASCAR on antitrust grounds. After eight days of trial arguments, both sides did settle out of court. Denny and Mary Lou Hamlin were both there for most of the hearing in Charlotte. Dennis was never able to attend the trial in person.
The Hamlin’s home was listed as a 3,724-square foot house, built in 2015, and public records say it was owned by the driver’s real estate company. Around 6:19 p.m. ET Sunday saw several fire departments called to the scene, with first responders arriving at 6:27 pm. Firefighters reported “to find a two-story home mostly engulfed, with flames showing through the entire attic,” according to the press release.
Because of the fire’s volume and the building collapsing, the cause is not yet undetermined. This investigation remains ongoing.
