Intentional Wreck at Indianapolis Lands Austin Hill One-Race Suspension
Richard Childress Racing driver Austin Hill will not be among Saturday’s Xfinity Series grid at Iowa Speedway.
The three-time winner this season has been parked by NASCAR for the HyVee Perks 250. This follows a wreck deemed purposeful late in last week’s Xfinity Series event at Indianapolis.
Hill and Aric Almirola were racing for a spot in the top-five and made contact into turn three. After saving his No. 21 Chevrolet, Hill turned hard left into Almirola’s right rear and sent him into an unprotected wall. In the immediate aftermath, Hill was held five laps by race control.
Per a new NASCAR rule for 2025, being suspended carries a much larger weight for Hill’s championship aspirations. The No. 21 team effectively forfeits their 21 earned Playoff bonus points, and will start the postseason with none. Hill will likely be the last seed now when the Xfinity Series Playoffs start in five races.
RCR has announced no plans to appeal this ruling. Cup Series driver Austin Dillon will substitute drive the No. 21 Chevrolet at Iowa Speedway in Hill’s absence.
Other penalties from Indianapolis affect the NASCAR Cup Series team of Legacy Motor Club. After Erik Jones lost a tire during the Brickyard 400, his pit crew has seen members Kellen Mills and John Rosselli suspended for the next two races.
