PSG vs Marseille Preview

Can Marseille win first Le Classique since 2011?

Paris Saint-Germain take on Marseille in the first Le Classique of the season at the Parc des Princes on Sunday.

The Parisians are in great form and have won their last five matches in all competitions.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are also in great goalscoring form, having scored 13 goals in their last three matches.

Meanwhile, Marseille have been very inconsistent recently and have won just one of their last five Ligue 1 games. Despite, their poor run of form, they still find themselves in fourth place just three points behind Nantes in second place.

However, they will have to overturn recent history to end that poor run of form on Sunday. Marseille are winless in Le Classique in their last 15 encounters with PSG, losing 12 of them.

Also, PSG have lost only two of their last 66 home games in Ligue 1, winning 55 of them.

Team News

PSG will be without Neymar on Sunday who is out with a hamstring injury. Defenders Thomas Meunier and Thilo Kehler are both out injured.

Also, midfielders Ander Herrera and Idrissa Gueye look set to be missing due to injury.

Meanwhile, Marseille are set to be without midfielder Florian Thauvin and defender Alvaro Gonzalez is a doubt.

Le Classique Previous Meetings

Marseille are winless in their last 15 meetings with PSG, their longest run without a victory against a single opponent in their top-flight history.

If PSG win, they will have won as many games as Marseille in this fixture, which currently stands at 31 victories for Marseille and 30 for PSG.

Marseille’s last win in Le Classique was back in November 2011 where goals from Loic Remy, Morgan Amalfitano and Andre Ayew secured a 3-0 win.

Les Olympiens last win in Paris came in February 2010 where they won 2-0.

Predicted Line-Ups

PSG (4-3-3): Navas; Dagba, Thiago Silva, Kimpembe, Diallo; Paredes, Marquinhos, Verratti; Di Maria, Icardi, Mbappe

Marseille (4-3-3): Mandanda; Sarr, Kamara, Caleta-Car, Sakai; Rongier, Strootman, Sanson; Germain, Benedetto, Payet

Le Classique Prediction

After a shaky start to the season, PSG are finally starting to hit their stride. They have improved both defensively and going forward in recent weeks.

They have scored 15 goals and conceded just once in their last five games in all competitions.

Thomas Tuchel has finally found balance in his side with the form of Idrissa Gueye given them defensive solidarity.

Also, PSG have the added boost of Kylian Mbappe returning from injury. The Frenchman came on against Club Brugge in midweek and transformed the game in the second half.

They are looking incredibly hard to stop and will expect to continue their good run of form with victory on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Marseille are struggling for form and have yet to show any kind of improvement under Andre Villas-Boas.

However, they did defeat Strasbourg in their last Ligue 1 match to end a run of four games without a win. But they will know they will have their work cut out to get a result in Paris.

The big problem has been scoring goals, having only hit the net just 12 times in 10 Ligue 1 games. Coming up against a side who have conceded just five goals in ten Ligue 1 games, it is hard to make a case of an away victory.

Prediction: PSG 3-0 Marseille
